A new Maps app closes the door on the long standing Google Maps feature while introducing a whole new solution with turn-by-turn navigation and the bird's eye-view flyover feature.
The new Maps app uses vector-based map elements for smoother graphics and makes panning, tilting and zooming incredibly fluid. New turn-by-turn navigation guides users to their destination with spoken directions.
One aspect of iOS 6 that has become evident is Apple's shedding of many Google services that have been included in the OS since the beginning. Aside from Google Maps, the standard YouTube app is also gone. Google has promised to make a new YouTube app available but this is something users have to choose to download.
It's too early to tell if Apple will stop making Google the default search service in iOS, but that is a possibility seeing the growing rift between Apple and Google, which also makes the rival Android mobile operating system.
The new PassBook App can clip tickets, coupons, gift cards, passes and even Starbucks' cards in preparation for the mobile wallet. This allows the iPhone to virtually carry all the cards and coupons in one place and slowly replace all these plastic cards that take up space. The mobile wallet is an area that Apple has not yet fully developed in its OS and it is widely believed that PassBook going to change all that.iOS 6 is a free upgrade to most existing iOS devices.
The thing is that with the pressure from Samsung's Galaxy, Google's Android, and Microsoft's Windows 8 devices, Apple has to be cautious with who they work with. To me, it may be a bit extreme to the point of paranoia, but I think this shows that it won't be too long before Apple is dethroned; the interface has grown old and it's time for new devices to take the spotlight.
